Book two in the world of Old Man's War fleshes out the world a bit more, while still telling a good story. The main character is new, but one of the supporting characters is from the first book.
I really like him. I've seen several comparisons to Robert Heinlein - especially for this series and Heinlein's military books. So far his books are character driven (not tech or tactics), and the characters are fun. I've only read these two books and one short story, but I plan to read a lot more of him.
