I've figured out my schedule for the Philly film fest. Lots of Asian action films this year, and more horror stuff then I'd expect (given that I'm not a big horror fan).

A weekend

Made it through another weekend. Friday was the closing for re-financing my house. It went well enough. New mortgage has a lower interest rate then the last one, but now I've got 10 years left instead of 2-3. Ah well, can't be helped.

Did some exchequer work on Saturday morning and then went into the city for the film festival.
Saturday's movies:
Ceremony
A sad, romantic comedy. Enjoyable but not memorable. 3/5

Stake Land
Good vampire film which begins in Pottstown with many local sites used. 4/5

Sunday's movies:
Endhiran (aka: Robot)
Crazy Bollywood (complete with several musical dance numbers) sf film about a robot who gets emotions. 4/5

My Joy
Very slow paced Russian film that didn't really deliver what I hoped for. I was looking for dark and weird, and got depressed and confused. 2/5

Womb
Mentally disturbing at times (as one might expect when you clone your dead lover and raise him as your child...) but very good. 4/5

The Troll Hunter
Great "found video" movie about hunting trolls in the wilds (and not so wilds) of Norway. A good deal more humor then I expected. 5/5

I learned that four movies was too much for one day (though Robot being 2.5 hours and My Joy being what it was probably contributed a lot.)

Tonight I've got two that should be pretty good (Lapland Odyssey & Fire of Conscience)

We used to do brunch and a movie (mmm...Strongbow on tap apple juice for breakfast), but Kildare's is closed and I need more exercise... so a walk and a movie is planned for this Sunday. Leave my house some time after 10 am, walk over to Regal Oaks for the 12:05 showing of Red, then after the movie, grab some food and walk back home. The walk is about 3.7 miles on the Schuylkill River Trail each way.

Anyone is welcome to join me for both or just meet me at the movie. Just let me know.

Look at that - I've got weekend plans :) If anyone would like to join me for some or all, let me know. I've bought my movie tickets already, so if you want to hit one of the shows you'll need to pick up tickets on your own. So far [livejournal.com profile] complexated will be joining me for the movies on Sunday and maybe the walk Saturday.

Saturday
- 8 AM Walking (leaving my house, walk to VF Park, doing the 5 mile loop, then back home - Google says about 7 miles total)
- Noon Gaming @ La Taverna & Cactus Grill near Valley Forge (Seize Your Turn)
- 7:30 PM Outrage (109 min) @ Ritz Five E
- 10:15 PM Outcast (94 min) @ Ritz Five E

Sunday
- 12:00 PM The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (152 min) @ Prince Music Theater
- 3:00 PM The Girl Who Played with Fire (129 min) @ Prince Music Theater
- 5:45 PM The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (148 min) @ Prince Music Theater

Well, time and money say that going to the SCA BoD meeting in Pittsburg isn't going to happen, so that means I'm going to be home the weekend of the 16th. The Philly Film Festival starts around that weekend... Time to find some movies to watch :)

I've picked two for Saturday evening (I'll probably go gaming in the afternoon):
7:30 PM Black Swan (103 min)
10:15 PM Outcast (94 min)

I'm having trouble with Sunday though. Too many movies not enough time.

First option is to see this trilogy:
12:00 PM The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (152 min)
3:00 PM The Girl Who Played with Fire (129 min)
5:45 PM The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (148 min)

Other ones that bubbled to the top of my list for Sunday are:
4:40 PM Parade (118 min)
5:00 PM Do It Again (85 min)
7:45 PM The Wolf Knife (88 min)
9:55 PM Rubber (85 min)
10:00 PM Easy Money (120 min)

Anyone have any recommendations? Anyone want to join me for some of them?

There are a bunch of others which caught my eye but I've not looked at scheduling for any of them. Sadly no serious SF or Fantasy films that I could find (ok, a few like Mutant Girls Squad are on the edge).

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
Hesher
Café
Mutant Girls Squad
The Last Circus
True Legend
Mandrill
Red Hill
Outrage
Horrible Way To Die

Right, so the Philadelphia Film Festival starts today. My weekend is booked, but I don't have much going on next week, so for the first time in years I may actually make it down to some shows. Of course the question is - which ones?

High on the list is The Forbidden Kingdom with Jackie Chan and Jet Li. More mainstream then what I usually want to see at a film fest, but Jackie Chan and Jet Li! Together!

There is the Swedish sci-fi action film Storm

There is also a very cool sounding anime: Vexille

There are a few possibly-great-for-scadians: Mongol and Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery of America

Some classics/blasts from the past: Deadline U.S.A. and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Ooo! Hong Kong action flicks! Eye in the Sky and Triangle
Korean action flick! Soo

And like nineteen other films that would be cool. Times like this I wish I was still a student living in Philly (so I could blow off all my classes and watch movies all week...)

I was going through some old LJ posts, added tags here and there and I ran across a link I had forgotten about (I originally posted it nearly 4 years ago). The site is called Film Movement and they are a DVD of the month club for award winning independent films. They are just starting their 6th year, and have a nice sized back catalog available.

Very tempting still.

Heh - I always seem to be trying to catch up. Must be my jet-setter lifestyle...

Ok, done catching up here - time to go catch up elsewhere.

Today was pretty nice. I got to sleep in for a while. Got to ignore the Jehovah's Witnesses when they stopped by. Even managed to answer two more comments from that quiz thing before starting my day.

I went down to West Chester to for the Christopher Moore talk and book signing. He was a lot of fun to listen to and I found out that his next book is a sequel to Blood Sucking Fiends and that Emperor Norton will be making a return appearance.

Once I'd made it through the line and gotten my books, I headed over to the Games Keep )

I'm feeling a little better today. I slept better last night than I had the previous few days, I'm not as congested today and I think my ear is starting to clear up. Hopefully after another day or so this will all be done and gone. Still, I'm skipping fencing tonight - I'd be out of breath and coughing too quickly to make it worth while.

I finished our state and federal taxes over the weekend. We owe a ton of money, but not as much as I though we might. None of my consulting work had taxes taken out, so I really should have been paying estimated taxes throughout the year. Fortunately the bulk of what I made was in the last part of the year so the late fees aren't too bad. Since I don't know what the next few months are going to hold for me financially, I had to put a hold on my automatic savings/investing plan, at least until things settle down again. Considering that last year the average personal savings rate in the US was -0.5% and we were closer to 13% I figure we'll still stay ahead of the curve for a while. :) (Deficient spending - if it's good enough for the government, then it's good enough for the average American)

Got to play some Munchkin with [livejournal.com profile] vonbryan and [livejournal.com profile] kathy_the_geek on Sunday. Yay!

Our Saturdays are already booked for March. Two children birthday parties, one SCA event (Iron Bog Investiture) and gaming. That means I'm going to miss the Philly Gamers on the 4th and Mudthaw on the 25th.

The Sundays however are still open. I want to use one or two of them for brunch and a movie. The current (or coming soon) films that I still want to see are: Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor), Mrs. Henderson Presents, Hoodwinked, Nanny McPhee, The Libertine, Ultraviolet, and V for Vendetta
Any one who might join us have any preferences? (So you know, Night Watch is subtitled and only showing at the Ritz in town).
