Book two in the world of Old Man's War fleshes out the world a bit more, while still telling a good story. The main character is new, but one of the supporting characters is from the first book.
So, how is John Scalzi? He's really popular with our patrons, but I haven't had time to read any of his stuff. What would you compare him with for authors? Inquiring minds want to know.
I really like him. I've seen several comparisons to Robert Heinlein - especially for this series and Heinlein's military books. So far his books are character driven (not tech or tactics), and the characters are fun. I've only read these two books and one short story, but I plan to read a lot more of him.
Dan W. and I read "Old Man's War" recently, and while I enjoyed reading it, it felt very popcorn. I read it in about a day (I'm not a fast reader), and it was mostly forgotten once I finished. Dan went on to read the second one, and agrees with you in terms of fleshing out the world a bit, which is something I was very curious about. Perhaps I can borrow your copy sometime?
