14. Thud! - Terry Pratchett [32 : 824/1536]
Last week, I finished the latest Discworld book on the train from NYC. Good fun read. Now I really need to break out my copy of the game Thud and get someone to play it with me (after we learn the rules...)

Oooookay... I read this and thought: "They've made a boardgame out of a Discworld book? Cool! Let me look it up on the web..." Only to find that the game has it's own website (http://www.thudgame.com), including discussion forums...

Where did you get your copy?

Yep, the game was created several years before the book came out. I first encountered it at JerseyDevilCon in 2002. I picked up a copy a few years later when it got offered through where I get my comics.

Nope. I had wondered that too when I first saw it, but apart from looking similar it's a different game. Check out the Wikipedia entry for an overview.

I'm always about a book behind on Pratchett because I don't get it in hardcover. But I did enjoy Going Postal, though not as much as I love Hogfather.

Pratchett is one of the authors I always buy as soon as I am able. What's worse with Pratchett, is that I only want the British hardcover. Usually I can get a good deal (30-40% off) at Amazon.co.uk.

I think my favorites are any of the ones with the Witches (or Death, or the City Guard, but not Rincewind...)

Death is my absolute favorite, and I could do without Rincewind, too. Though the one where he's dealing with a stereotypical Japanese tourist is kinda fun.

Death was originally my favorite, but I the Witches have pulled ahead through the years. I consider myself lucky that I didn't give up on Discworld after the first two books; Rincewind was just not for me. Then I got to Mort and was hooked.

I started with Wyrd Sisters*. I'm very glad I didn't start at the beginning. I've read them, and occasionally re-read them, but I think I would've given up entirely if they had been my first exposure to Pratchett.

*Actually, I started with Good Omens, but that isn't a Discworld book.

I own a few hardcovers of all kinds of books. Most because a paperback will never be available and one because I want the author to sign it some day because I'm in the acknowledgements. But I like my fiction to fit in one hand as I walk around, and hardcover books aren't as good as pocket-sized paperbacks for that.

I can understand that. Most of my reading these days is either in bed or on the train so size isn't a big deal.

Set This House in Order (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006095485X/103-6583132-9182217?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance) is the book where the author acknowledged me. I also like _Fool on the Hill_ by the same author, but I'm not very fond of _Sewer, Gas, and Electric_, though I do own all of them (FotH, I have 2 paperback copies, the other 2 are hardcovers) because he's a guy who lived in my dorm and I know via email.

Hey, I know those books! I've read the first two and have the third sitting on the shelf. And yes, I pulled it out to see your name in the acknowledgements :)

I've enjoyed both Fool on the Hill, and Sewer, Gas and Electric, so I'm looking forward to when I get around to reading the new one. (Because his books come out so infrequently, I tend to not read them right away. I do the same thing with the works of James Morrow)
