...said the flier they tried to hand us on the Strip.
A few things I forgot to mention from yesterday. When checking in, the clerk looked at when we were checking out and commented: "A week in Vegas? Good luck with that."
Our room is on the 34th floor and looks out onto the Strip. We've got the mini-Statue of Liberty out there, as well as the Manhattan Express roller coaster and views of several other casinos. Very cool! The only downside is that the sun rises right in front of us making for an early morning blinding when I open the curtains...
Today was a day of firsts for us. We had our first guide book failure - we drove out to visit a recommended Sunday brunch, only to find that the restaurant was no longer around. So we drove back to our hotel, and walked up to Paris hoping to catch their breakfast buffet or brunch buffet. Made it in time for the brunch, but decided to skip it (didn't need the $25 per person meal, nor the champagne that came with it). Instead we went to the café which was right next door where I could get breakfast and Amy could get a lunch salad - both were excellent. After breakfast and wandering around a little, we headed to our first Vegas show: We Will Rock You. It's, if you couldn't guess, a show based on the music of Queen. The plot is pretty cheesy (a future where rock is dead and the world is under the control of a single corporation - very "Kilroy Was Here"), but the music and the show are great. Very high energy, very tongue in cheek and very good singing all at the same time. They tweak a few of the lyrics here and there to better fit their story line, mostly by adding references to the internet and related technologies, but none of them were really jarring. Overall I'd recommend it if you are a fan of Queen - Amy loved it :) They were sold out of the soundtrack at the gift shop, but we'll probably pick it up at some point.
After the show we went back to our hotel to drop some stuff off. On the way in I heard that the Eagles won their game - made me wish I had put some money on them on Saturday. I had wanted to (just to say I'd done it mostly) but didn't take the time to figure out how to actually go about it. We did manage to sign up for their players club finally, but didn't play anything yet.
We headed out again making our way down to the Luxor where we had tickets to see the Blue Man Group. This involved walking to Excalibur, taking a tram to Mandalay Bay (passing Luxor in the process), then taking a different tram back to Luxor. At the Luxor we grabbed a quick bite to eat, signed up for their players club (what the heck - it's free), and did our first Vegas gambling - mostly to kill some time before the show. We played a few penny slot machines, Amy playing on a machine call Frog Prince, and mine had some sort of turkey shoot theme. By the time we needed to get to the theater, I had blown all of a buck on the game, and Amy about broke even on the $5 she started with.
The Blue Man Group is pretty hard to describe. It's part concert, part performance art, part comedy, but all very good. It starts when the ushers started giving out lengths of white crepe paper to everyone in the audience to do whatever they want with. Amy made rabbit ears, and I made a sort of chain thing. The show is interactive, with a few people being brought up on stage, or the group going out and interacting with the audience. The music was great - where else could I hear both Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" (played on PVC tubing) and KLF's "Last Train to Transcentral" at the same show?
After the show we hung out at Luxor for awhile playing more penny slots (yep - we're high rollers now!). I think my favorite was the Alien slot machine. I was up to $38 from my second $5 at one point and Amy continued to play her original $5 for the entire time. At the end we cashed out $17 putting us about $1 ahead for the night. Not bad - play video games for a few hours, get paid a buck...
After that we came back to New York-New York to look for some sort of dessert, but most of the places had closed (it was 11:30), only the bars were still up and running. We stopped in at the Nine Fine Irishmen, where I got a cider (not a brand I know, can't recall the name right now), but we didn't stay long.
We have more photos :)

Date: 2005-01-24 10:42 pm (UTC)Mike, when/if you go to the Venetian, could you write a review from a tourist point of view? It wasn't yet open when I was there last, and I'm jealous.
