Book two of Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crime series. The Gingerbread man is on the loose again, and someone has murdered Goldilocks. It's up to inspectors Jack Spratt and Mary Mary to solve the crimes and save the day.

Ooo...these sound interesting. I've never heard of this series, but your description reminds me of the comic book series Fables. Ever read?

Yep! Fables is one of my favorite comics right now. It does have some similarities - but in this series the everyone knows there are story book characters living among them.

Along the same lines - check out Robert Rankin's The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse.
