Amy and I are looking to go to New York City for an extended weekend some time this summer (or fall).  We're going to visit the Met (since neither of us have been), and probably the American Museum of Natural History (for the minerals and gems).  We plan to see a show or two (Avenue Q, Wicked, Jumpers, who knows!)  I'm pissed that the Morgan Library is closed until 2006, but some of their stuff is at the Met.

We're also looking for ideas for interesting/off-beat/unique/lesser known stuff to do or places to visit.  Any ideas?

I saw something in a Cool News of the Day (http://reveries.com/), I think, recently about something in East Village. I want to say that it's literary performances... Ah! It was today's Cool News, "New Urban Entertainment", and it's something called literary performance readings. One of the places mentioned is an East Village reading bar called KGB, http://www.kgbbar.com/, which I think is in NYC. That might be neat / offbeat. :)

There's The Cloisters (http://www.metmuseum.org/events/ev_cloisters.asp?HomePageLink=collections_cloisters_l), a seriously medieval/Renaissance museum-and-park.

Heh. I actually logged in to suggest the Cloisters as well. ^_^ But don't go on a hot day, since the museum has no air-conditioning (and never will, apparently, due to solid stone walls).

For dining out, Morrell's Wine Bar (http://www.morrellwinebar.com/winebar/index.asp) in Rockefeller Center is highly recommended. Upscale food and great wine, worth the price. It also has the added advantage that it's literally right next door to the Kinokuniya Japanese Bookstore and across the street from a Met museum store.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention...though you probably know where it is, already. Book-off is a wonderful second-hand Japanese bookstore on East 41st street, right next to Bryant Park. ^_^
