18. Faces Under Water - Tanith Lee [709/1569]
This is the first of a series of books set in a parallel Venice (The Secret Books of Venus). If it follows her previous Secret Books, each book will be unconnected to the others apart from the setting. Like many of her recent books, this one paints great visuals - enough details to get a proper feel for the city and its inhabitants without being overly wordy. Must read more Tanith Lee!

Tanith Lee has always been amazingly talented with words - she can create extraordinary images and concepts with a few well-chosen phrases.

I wish I could write like her.

Tanith Lee is one of my absolute favorite authors. But I really do need to read more of her stuff - she puts out so many books that I've fallen very behind. I think I have over 70 of her books, and still need to read about 20+ of them :/
