mikekn: (Just me)
This Sunday I will be participating in the Philadelphia Half Marathon as part of a team raising money for the Alzheimer's Association.

My grandmother Mary (Stauffer) Knauer passed away from Alzheimer's in 2009, but the person we knew had left long before that. Alzheimer's kills the people you know while leaving behind their shell. The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research.

I'm about half way to my goal, and every little bit helps. Please join me in supporting a great cause:

A week or so ago I finally got all the information I needed to turn in the Kingdom 2010 EOY report. Yeah, 2010. In four months I get to start the 2011 one. Needless to say, I'm not getting to all the exchequer stuff that I want to work on and instead seem to be dealing with one problem after another.

At some point early in the year, my beard was getting a bit long and I joked that I would trim it when I got the EOY report done. I actually let it go this whole time, and now I need to decide what to do with it.

Anyone got suggestions? :)

The other day I mentioned that I might be trying something new this past weekend. During our Saturday run two weekends ago, one of the coaches said that she was unable to participate in the Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon because she was having knee surgery. She offered up her registration if anyone wanted to give it a try. I thought about it and asked a few people about it - last thing I wanted was to wind up injuring myself again. Eventually I decided to go for it and gave her a call. I finally heard back late Thursday evening and we arranged to meet on Sunday morning at the race. (So I only had two days to get used to the idea that I was going to do this.)

It took me longer to get out of the house then I planned, and then longer to find parking once I got into Philly. Then I had the mile walk to our meeting place at the Rocky statue. I got there too late to get into our group picture, but I got there. There was about another hour of waiting before I had actually started the run (and to be clear, I still mostly walk, running only about a third of the race). Every so often along the course there would be a band or a group of cheerleaders, as well as water stations.

I'm pleased to report that I survived and completed the 13.1 mile course, and at a pace that I don't think I've ever done during my other "runs".
