I'm feeling a little better today. I slept better last night than I had the previous few days, I'm not as congested today and I think my ear is starting to clear up. Hopefully after another day or so this will all be done and gone. Still, I'm skipping fencing tonight - I'd be out of breath and coughing too quickly to make it worth while.
I finished our state and federal taxes over the weekend. We owe a ton of money, but not as much as I though we might. None of my consulting work had taxes taken out, so I really should have been paying estimated taxes throughout the year. Fortunately the bulk of what I made was in the last part of the year so the late fees aren't too bad. Since I don't know what the next few months are going to hold for me financially, I had to put a hold on my automatic savings/investing plan, at least until things settle down again. Considering that last year the average personal savings rate in the US was -0.5% and we were closer to 13% I figure we'll still stay ahead of the curve for a while. :) (Deficient spending - if it's good enough for the government, then it's good enough for the average American)
Got to play some Munchkin with
vonbryan and
kathy_the_geek on Sunday. Yay!
Our Saturdays are already booked for March. Two children birthday parties, one SCA event (Iron Bog Investiture) and gaming. That means I'm going to miss the Philly Gamers on the 4th and Mudthaw on the 25th.
The Sundays however are still open. I want to use one or two of them for brunch and a movie. The current (or coming soon) films that I still want to see are: Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor), Mrs. Henderson Presents, Hoodwinked, Nanny McPhee, The Libertine, Ultraviolet, and V for Vendetta
Any one who might join us have any preferences? (So you know, Night Watch is subtitled and only showing at the Ritz in town).

Date: 2006-02-27 06:20 pm (UTC)Basically several people in the shire (including me) felt that G&G had run it's course. Very few people were playing in the games tournament. Attendance was still stable but most folks were just treating it as a social event (good for hanging out, eating, drinking, etc.) So we decided to try something different this year. Still have a "spring" event, just change some of the activities to try and bring in some new folks and breath some new life into the event. Part of the idea was to give more of a back drop to a social event.
We opted to go with a bigger site to give us more room to play with - only problem was that it wasn't available on our first choice date (Mar 11th). Our second choice (Mar 4th) was open, but then we found out K&Q Rapier was going to be on that date in Bhakail. Other dates had us running into K&Q Bardic (not as much fun dancing with out the Branslers), Iron Bog Investiture and Mudthaw.
About that time Brynn came forward with the Fields of Gold event. So, at that point we decided to put off on the "spring" event and do Fields of Gold.
Then Fields of Gold got canceled...
So for now folks are focusing on Alles Faire, plus we have a few options for something in the fall (scola and/or "spring" event).

Date: 2006-03-01 07:26 pm (UTC)Hey - someone gave me an interesting idea the other day. Wouldn't it be cool to have a human chess match that isn't choreographed? Have two really good chess players? But perhaps still have the combat idea to mix it up a bit. I can imagine the fencers being highly amused by this. Non combatants could participate as well - using rock, paper, scissors in place of combat whenever a non-combatant is involved. I was originally thinking of it as a children's activity, but I suspect it might be a little boring for children.
