Just the usual update stuff...

It's been awhile, so I'm just going to hit some of the "highlights".

The September shire meeting went pretty well. We continued our work on the charter, finishing three more sections and approving two for next time. That only leaves four sections to be discussed (Communications, Shire Events, Demos, Shire Property). I suspect the Communications and Events ones will take the longest time to work through. Meanwhile, our October meeting will be the first time where we start the election process for almost half of the officers.

As a side note, I was very pleased at how easily the shire approved a fairly large donation to hurricane Katrina relief.

I spent the first weekend down in Caer Adamant at Swamp Thing. Got to shoot some archery, run the range for a bit, and generally hang out with friends. The only down side was when our friend Seamus had an arrow "explode" into his hand. It required a few trips to the emergency room (one from the event, and later one after he got home) and some hand surgery to remove all the pieces. The good news is that there seems to have been no permanent damage and he will be back shooting once everything is healed.

I've only made it to one of [livejournal.com profile] singewulf's archery practices this month, but he's getting a decent sized crowd. I've got nothing else happening next week, so I should be at the next one.

The second weekend was our Green Lane demo. The Green Lane camp ground runs a Scottish/Irish fest and we set up a good sized encampment and put on displays of fighting, fencing, siege, and A&S. I'm not sure how well we fit into the Scottish/Irish theme, but the park and the attendees all seem to enjoy having us there, and we have a good time as well. I spent the weekend in a little A-frame tent teaching and playing a few period games. I had a good time hanging out with the folks who lent a hand manning the table. It's interesting seeing how many of the same folks visit the games each year. I've gotten to recognize a few of them over the year and they always stop in and play a game or two. One of these days they will start winning too.

We hosted the Brewers Guild meeting around the middle of the month. Not a large crowd, but enough for us to get through officer selection for the next year. We even had time for some tasting at the end of the meeting - had them try my cider and oatmeal stout, plus [livejournal.com profile] marietta_sca's three beers. Good stuff :)

I almost got stuck with another visit to NYC, but they had to put off the experiments a day which meant a trip up there no longer fit my schedule. They are doing some animal testing, which isn't too pleasant to begin with, but I'm only needed there if there is a problem with the equipment, so mostly I get to sit around and watch :/

Last weekend I drove to Rhode Island for the 40th Year Celebration that the Barony of the Bridge put on. I brought up a bunch of EK and SCA history stuff, including all of The Box. The display went over pretty well, but there really weren't a lot of people interested in the details. I'm hoping to start bring a slightly smaller selection to Kingdom events when I get the chance. I did get to hang out with some cool folks for a little while, including Baron Steffan, Baroness Elspeth, and someone from Carolingia whose name I only heard once (something like Eowyn or Aeowyn?). She's been in the SCA for a good while - made one of the first Pennsic maps.

I did make it to the Philly Area Gamers this past Tuesday. Good group of folks. I got to play Mystery in the Abbey, Guillotine, and Carcassonne. Lost all of them, but that's ok :) Their next get together is Oct 1st, so I'm going to have to miss that, but I'm hoping to catch the one after that.

With all this gaming I finally got around to messing with the BoardGameGeek website. I now have most (but not all) of my game collection listed up there. While poking around the site I was reminded of one of my other favorite games: Borderlands. It is a Risk-like game from the same folks who did Cosmic Encounter. Back in the 80s they made a computer version of it called "Lords of Conquest" for the Apple II and other early PCs.

On a whim I googled for Lords of Conquest, and found a web site with an IIe emulator and disks for a bunch of old Apple games, including LoC. Unfortunately, it's extremely slow and reset part way through the game I started. So the next search was for LoC and java. Found some one who had rewritten the game a few years ago, so I've been goofing off and playing it from time to time. Still enjoy it :)

That would have been Lady Eowyn Eilonwy of Alewife Brook. She's been around forever!

two literary refrences (at least that I can catch) in one name... now this may be my ignorance talking, but I really thought the sca tried to avoid that when choosing a persona?

The historicity entirely aside: the SCA has steadily evolved over the years. In the early days, Tolkein-inspired names were actually pretty common, and those older names have been grandfathered in...
