Cat time

I had a dream last night that Kim sent me an email about another cat. Not too far from reality - I did ask her to see if they could grab the sibling of the new guy (I think his name will be Tyr, but I want to talk it over with him first...), but no emails yet.

I'm now leaving the door to the office open all the time, but have two baby gates (one on top of the other) in the doorway. This lets him see the girls and vice versa without letting them really interact yet. I was concerned that he would hide more, but he continues to empty his food bowl, so he is still moving around both at night and during the day. I can reach into his hiding spots and pet him; sometimes he'll hiss other times he won't.

Grimalkin has started her insulin - one unit twice a day. She's very good about getting her shot (and I've only managed to stick myself twice!) She is getting Insulin Glargine (Lantus from Sanofi Aventis.) It's pretty costly (over a $100 per bottle). If I'm reading everything correctly the bottle holds 1000 units (100 units/mL, 10 mL), so there is a year supply there. Unfortunately, the meds expire after being open for four weeks.

Because the internet doesn't have enough cat pictures, here are some of the sib hanging out at Kim and Derek's house.

What a cutie! I hope you can get him.

On the meds, ugh! There's no way to store part of the bottle for longer (freezing? vacuum-sealing?)? Do you know anybody else with a diabetic cat with whom you could share? That much waste (and expense) for that little being used out of the bottle is really unfortunate. :-(

Hopefully you find out some more information about Grimmy's meds. My vets have been incredibly creative in methods to get Mousie the correct doses for the least amount of money, so perhaps there's something out there. It's for DAMN sure she's not the only diabetic cat in the area! Mostly I'm just glad to hear you have a shots program that's working and a happy Grimmymouse... and that the baby is improving. Siggy took a long time to de-feral, but he is such a snugglebear now!

Awww....so much cute! And I hope you can find a good way to get Grimalkin her meds with as little financial pain as possible.

Ahh interesting. Our vet still seems fairly clueless. They are putting Bandit back on Humulin, which felinediabetes.com, etc say no good things about.

I was wondering about Lantus. I didn't realize it expired that quickly. Humulin is similar.

I guess that is one of the great things of Levemir, it seems to last much much longer. I hope to move towards that.

do cats and people use the same types of insulin?

I bet there's some diabetic "crazy cat ladies" out there who would be tickled to share with her.
