Pennsic is not my vacation

We just emptied
violet_amy's car, so once again it's time for the post-Pennsic post. This year was a good mix of new stuff and usual stuff. I'm still working on balancing how my time is spent, but overall it was an improvement on last year.
New Camp This was our first year camping with Eldenwood. I missed seeing the Sin Pit folks on a regular basis, but Eldenwood is also a good group. The location couldn't be beat as far as I was concerned. Easy access to the Games Tent and surrounding area. The nights I was available to hang out didn't quite sync up with the nights folks were staying in camp, but I still enjoyed the time spent there.
Games Tent I opened up the Games Tent on Saturday, and went right into teaching a Tarot class. It was very well attended in spite of being early on the first Saturday - I gave out all 30 handouts I had, and we had six games going at once. We had 15 scheduled classes, plus we added two Go classes (the same two we added last year - now if only we could hear from them in time to get them on the schedule...) and a Fitchneal tournament. We also had one class that failed to show up on the schedule (they lost the info I gave them), but we never heard from the teacher so I'm not sure what was up there. In addition to the Tarot class, I taught intro Go and Tafl classes and my Losing Loadum class. I took Galen's Atlanbaj class - Turkish checkers that includes a very severe huffing rule (fail to make a jump and lose the game). On a cool class note - one of our teachers was a 7 year old. It was her second year teaching at Pennsic and this year she taught two different classes, each one being offered twice. I sat in on her Three Mans Morris class and she does a good job.
We had a "new" tent this year - a vinyl one instead of the usual canvas. It did a good job at keeping the rain out, but it was much warmer inside then the canvas ones and the walls were much heavier (we put up the walls on two sides of the tent). We got an extra table and chairs this year, which was very cool. We'd still like a bigger tent, but we realize there isn't much chance of that now that Pennsic isn't renting the tents.
Our biggest problem remains getting enough people to staff the tent.
Game Gnight My friend Galen has taken over Salaamallah's merchant space this year. He still sells all of Salaamallah's games, plus he has all the games he has been selling at events and cons. I helped watch the booth when he was teaching his classes and helped out on a few other nights (like Midnight Madness). In exchange I was given a bunch of new games (it would have cost me more to buy them at retail then it did to attend Pennsic for the week - I probably came out ahead if I calculate things that way). He had a good first war merchanting and has quite a few ideas for things he'll do differently next year.
Classes Once again I only made it to one class this year (outside of the Games Tent). This time it was a KW Exchequer Meeting that
ghita held. That make two years in a row that she's been involved in running the only class I make it to. (Last year it was the Stump the Seneschal class with her and
faheud).
The only classes I really regret missing were the Seneschal class and the Wulstehaube (16th century German hat) class (if only to find out what one looks like, since Google failed me).
Shopping For once I did almost no shopping this war. I got my annual t-shirt, and some quick mead kits, but that was it (not counting the games). No new music, books or garb.
SCA History Display The second annual SCA History display went off nicely. This year we were in the barn and not up against any Kingdom courts. Some folks from the West brought out some cool artifacts (first personal crown, first kingdom crowns, and The Muckin' Great Clubbe). I brought a bunch of the stuff I had last year, plus a few things I pulled out for the 40th Year event in the Barony of the Bridge.
The day of the display was not my best, but it worked out in the end. It started when I went to the games tent, but forgot the handouts for my 10 AM class. Later, I stopped in to A&S Point to check on a few things before heading out to my car (parked in row 25...) to get the history stuff to cart back. Cathan was there and offered to drive me out in his golf cart. This proved doubly helpful when we got out there and I realized that my car keys were back in camp... He raced us back to camp, then back out to the car then up to the barn - far quicker then if I had had to walk the whole thing.
Household We had a few household gatherings this year over at Starry Knights (the Gryphonhaven household, not Starry Knights). We have members in three states, so there aren't many opportunities for all of us to get together. We didn't get as much hang out time as
dame_margarete was hoping for, but we at least covered all the introductions.
Since
shadowpony and I had been joking about having stealth protege belts,
dame_margarete gave all three of us shiny new belts in bright yellow. I'll probably continue to use my first one for most things, and the new one for when I get dressed up and spiffy. In addition to belts, we got a homework assignment (our first in quite a while).
Visits & Nightlife I did a little better this year then last. I spent some nights hanging out with folks or working at the game booth. I didn't attend any parties (unless you count when
shadowpony,
starseeker1221 and I wandered into something at Midrealm Royal while looking for
nicosomething and
ladyvonkulp. I should have asked what was going on there...). Never made it over the hill to the lake.
Things I should have done but didn't Let's see... I missed both of my order meetings, EK Court and the EK Curia. I never made it up the hill to put in some time as an archery marshal. I missed Bhakail court for the first time in years. I missed the EK Exchequers meet and greet and all the brewer meet and greets. These are all things I like to do and enjoy doing, but just didn't have the time/energy for this year.
Overall, not bad. I'll go again. ;)
