27. The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco *

Seen the movie, and now I've heard the book. Having seen the movie a few times I had a good idea of the plot and characters. What was interesting was how different the story felt. The book is a bit long winded at times, but still very enjoyable. Now I need to see the movie again while the book is fresh in my mind and see what changes were made.

What you really need to do is to find one of the books that annotates the Eco novel. I was honestly amazed at what I had not understood!

An annotated guide would definitely help. The same thing was done for the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" graphic novels.

Odd that I've never read Rose. Loved the movie, though.
I met Umberto Eco at a Borders booksigning/reading many eons ago. He's actually quite charming and seems to enjoy his public following.

I've yet to make it all the way through Foucault's Pendulum, though...

I actually read Foucault's in paper, but it was a long slog -- it took a few tries to get through it. Fascinating, especially given my fondness for conspiracies and secret societies and such, but it's quite dense...

The film was how I learned the word "palimpsest": at least they were up-front (if you're erudite ) enough to admit that the film didn't bear much relation to the book at all. I'm so glad I read the book first, and I was disappointed that Prof. Eco would allow his work to be molested so savagely.
