Last Friday [livejournal.com profile] complexated and I (with some much appreciated help from [livejournal.com profile] violet_amy) finished our playing card project and took them up to the St. Festus Fair laurel challenge.

The whole process was a lot of fun, though by the time we had decided we were going to try for it and then got half decent at the skills we'd need, we only had about a week left before the challenge. We took several short cuts along the way such as stenciling the pip cards instead of block printing them (this was done in period, but was a later technique then we were going for). We didn't finish carving four of our face cards so some images had to do double duty.

I uploaded a bunch of photos taken while we were making our set of playing cards. Our documentation is also on-line now. Sadly I forgot to get some good pictures of the completed set before we took them up to the event (where we gave them to Adhemar). But we plan to make more in the near future. We need to finish carving the blocks we did, and make some better stencils.

I'm looking forward to continuing this project, but for now I think I'll take a week or so off :)

Question on Flickr: how did you get your web addy to reflect the mknauer (after photos). Do you have a paid account? Or is there something cool I can do to do that?

I haven't found any info about the results of the Laurel challenges. Who competed against you? Did you win?

yay! it's fun to see you're work. Especially since I acquired chisels and tried my first cuts (to scrap crappy pine which is NOT nice to work with) this weekend.

I'm going to see what scrap wood various woodworkers have. I may also stop by one of the sawmills in MD.

Way Cool!

Neeeeaaat. That's a project I've thought about trying for years, and never gotten around to. Nicely done...
