East Kingdom 40th Anniversary
Mar. 12th, 2007 02:15 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
On June 2nd in 1968 (AS 3), the East coast chapter of the SCA held their first event at the Cloisters in New York City. The planned tournament got rained out and rescheduled. On July 21st the first Crown Tourney took place in Cloves Lake Park, Staten Island, NY. Maragon the Artificer and Adrienne of Toldedo were appointed to sit as King and Queen and preside over the first tourney.
I'll need to check some notes and quiz
msmemory for what happened next (History of the West says Bruce was knighted and crowned King that day, while the OP shows Maragon as King until October). No matter, the point is that next summer the East Kingdom will turn 40 years old.
I would like to have an EK History display at as many Kingdom events as possible that year. My current event list looks like this:
12th Night (Jan)
Fencing Champs (Jan/Feb)
Bardic Champs (Feb/Mar)
Spring Coronation (Apr)
Spring Crown Tourney (Apr/May - Northern Shores? )
Equestrian Champs (May/Jun)
Champions of Arms (Jun/Jul)
Archery Champs (Jun/Jul)
Pennsic (Aug)
Fall Coronation (Sept/Oct)
Fall Crown Tourney (Oct/Nov - Northern?)
Art and Sciences Champs (Winter)
Birka? (Jan)
Kingdom Crusades? (Oct)
I've been planning on going by the calendar year (hit the events in 2008) so it would be both before, during and after the 40th birthday. I don't know if anyone is planning an event to specifically celebrate the birthday - if I do this right, I don't know that one will be needed (year long celebrations always trump day long celebrations in my book), but if one does show up I'll add it to the list.
Are there any other events that it would make sense to be at?
The first thing that jumps to mind is - that is a hell of a lot of events to go to. Especially since I know many of them won't be local, even by my extended definition of local (Boston? Sure, we can day trip that). It is doable, provided I don't commit to much else that year.
After next year, it might be nice to make a history display a regular thing for one or two events (I'm thinking 12th Night and Pennsic).
I'd stick to only EK (and some Society) stuff. I'd try and focus what I bring to the event in question, so that the display will be of interest to the attendees and so that folks who wind up seeing it several times can see something new each time. This year I'd like to do a few more displays like we had at K&Q Bardic so I can work out the kinks and see more of what interests people and what doesn't.
The current task is to brain storm and start getting ready. In a month or two I want to put something in Pikestaff about it, and put out a call for photos and artifacts. Probably before that, I'll want to send a note to the Prince, Princess and Seneschal to let them know about my desires and see what thoughts/ideas they may have. I need to see if we can track down some of the displays that were at the SCA 40th in the Barony of the Bridge (oh,
baron_steffan...)
So, anyone want to help? :) Any volunteers to travel all over with me? I figure
violet_amy will want to go to some of the events, but probably not all of them. Any thoughts or ideas that immediately pop into your mind when considering this idea? I may not get to respond to everything, but I'll read it all.
I'll need to check some notes and quiz
