Day 1
My lunch time mission was a success. I picked up a new wheel for the wheelbarrow (a solid one this time - it can never go flat!), and a 12' pole pruner. I also grabbed a Weed Hound while I was there, since I had heard good things about it from [livejournal.com profile] kathy_the_geek.

My To Do list for this project is:
1. Move the big brush pile (hereafter, The Pile) into the dumpster.
2. Move the little brush pile (by the oak tree) into the dumpster.
3. Remove the unwanted bushes in the front of the house.
4. Remove the unwanted bushes and weeds from the side and back of the house.
5. Trim out the dead branches from all the trees.
6. Remove more unwanted bushes, this time from the other side of the house.
7. Weed the ivy bed.
8. Move the termite infested fire wood to the dumpster.
9. Think about removing the lower branches on some of the evergreen trees.

My top priority is dealing with The Pile, so that is where I started today. That was my first mistake. You see The Pile is on the side of the house that gets the most sun in the evening and the walk between it and the dumpster has very little shade. My second mistake was not really a mistake, more of an oops. This occurred when I was loading up the wheelbarrow for another run and disturbed a nest of bee-like critters (they looked like small yellow jackets) who were making their home in The Pile. I sprayed them down with some hornet and wasp killer, and then let them sit for the night.

Since The Pile was now off limits, I moved on to getting rid of some bushes that I really disliked. Of the three I was able to completely remove one and get the other two down to just a trunk. I also did some trimming of one of the bushes we're keeping - now you can actually get to the gas meter!

Now I didn't do all this stuff in one go. I took a few breaks; went inside to hydrate, cool off and catch my breath. By nine it was getting dark, so I called it a night.

Did I mention that the dumpster is big? Like 30 cubic yards big. It's a walk-in dumpster. I made a little ramp so I can roll the wheelbarrow or trash can right up inside. I've already filled the back third of it. But it's not packed in, so it should be able to hold a lot more.
