Last week Bootsie went to the vet to get spayed. They also wound up pulling some bad teeth on her, so she came back to my place for a few days of recovery and antibiotics. During this time she lived in a cage in my garage - it was pretty crowded in there with food, water, litter box, and hiding box, but she seemed to do ok. Tuesday evening we drove the cage out to Kim's house and opened it up in the back yard. As soon as she had a clear view of where she was she took off to under the neighbor's shed - a usual hiding spot for her. Hopefully she will settle back in with no problems.

Tuesday morning Eir went in to get spayed and was back home that night to start her recovery. I haven't seen her out and about yet, but she seems to be doing ok when I check on her. She is back to hanging out in the closet - still letting me pet her if I reach in there.

Tyr is doing really well and can't wait to ditch the baby gates keeping him and Eir in the office (Soon I tell him - just finish off the dry food and give you sister some time to recover).

On the good news front - I was away this weekend and Kim stopped in to feed and medicate the cats. She wasn't able to get to the house in time to give Grimalkin her evening insulin shot, so I told her to skip it (too much insulin is a much bigger risk then too little). Monday I was doing a glucose curve on Grimalkin - taking blood every 2-3 hours and observing how well the insulin works. At least that was the plan. My first measurement was before she ate or got her morning shot and it came in at 95. Normal for a cat is between 70-100, with peaks of up to 120 after eating. When the vet did her last curve she was coming in at 300+ and the insulin was bringing her down to about 200. I opted to not give her a shot and take another measurement later. I was taking them less frequently then I would for the curve, but since I wasn't tracking the effect of the insulin that was fine. Her numbers were something like: 95, 94, 76, 68. The next morning I took one more and got a 95. So for now the vet says we call her in remission and just keep her off dry food and watch for any signs. A glucose test from time to time to keep an eye on her numbers is also a good idea.

For the bad news - In the process of getting Eir into a carrier I got well and truly bit and chewed on. My right index finger is currently a bruised and swollen sausage (but I can still type!). Visited my doc the day after and got a script for antibiotics, and have a follow-up visit tomorrow.

So I don't leave you on a down note, here is Tyr standing guard at the closet (Eir is inside, behind the boxes)

22. Variable Star - Robert Heinlein & Spider Robinson *

A Spider Robinson story based on an outline for a novel that Robert Heinlein never finished. Read by Spider Robinson. Happy to say it does have the feel of both their input - very enjoyable read/listen.
