This was an interesting pair of books to read at the same time.
Player Piano takes place in a future where another world war has been fought and led to a "dystopia of automation" lead by the engineer and managers.
Shades of Grey takes in a future where Something Happened leading to world where people have limited ability to see colors and are governed by those with the best color perception.
In Player Piano, young adults are tested to see if they can go to college and get a good job or will be stuck in the Army or Reconstruction & Reclamation Corps.
In Shades of Grey, young adults are tested to see what their color perception is which will determine their station in life.
Both books follow the adventure of someone trying to buck the system and bring about change.
