17. Purgatorio - Dante Alighieri *
Having made it though hell, I figured I may as well continue following Dante for a while. In Purgatorio, we see how those souls which have not been damned must do penance for their sins (divided into the seven deadlies mostly). As they progress up the mountain they stop only at those levels which match their sins, progressing again when they have been purged. At the top is the garden of eden which serves as the jump off point for the journey to paradise.
Less name dropping in this volume, and most of those we hear about are contemporaries of Dante. (I assume this is because most older souls would have already moved on through purgatory).
