More general update stuff.

Got to shoot some archery last week. Hopefully I'll be able to make most of [livejournal.com profile] singewulf's practices (although the Sunday ones will be tricky).

Went to my first demo of the season - wasn't as prepared as I could have been, but the demo went just fine. I've got two more that I'm coordinating in the next week, and then a bunch that I offered to help out with after that.

Friday I spent most of the afternoon and evening helping my mom with her website and computer. The computer was sluggish and we were worried about spyware or a virus. Turned out that when she updated one of her spyware scanners she got tricked into loading another one as well. It's a real detection program (as opposed to being spy or adware itself), but it has a realtime component that just sucked down the processor. We removed that, updated all the others and ran the scans - everything was clean. For her website, I'm trying to keep her from using Frontpage...so far I'm winning the battle, but HTML editing is really not her thing and she's had some training with Frontpage. I think my main (only?) point of leverage is that I won't support anything done in Frontpage.

Saturday we did our daytrip up to Landsknecht - good time (even if I spent much of it in classes or meetings). Didn't spot the archery field (didn't look very hard) so I didn't shoot any. Got to see and chat with lots of folks, so that was very cool. I'm thinking we should really camp for War Camp next month.

Sunday we went to a friends baby shower (yes, another baby shower). Got to meet several people I've seen only though LJ (*wave*). Very cool and fun folks. :) Hopefully I'll be able to visit them a little during Pennsic.

And then there's Monday. What a waste of a day. Maybe I can make it up tonight. I seem to have a free evening. Actually I seem to have three of them in a row. Anyone want to take bets on whether I get stuff done or just goof off each night?

Okay, but am I alone in thinking that there's an issue with a spyware detection program that acts in some ways rather like spyware...?

I was talking more about the 'tricking her into installing it' part...

Oh, well, okay. I can see how that'd happen.

Definitely camp for War Camp - the partying is well worth it, and it's always a good shakedown cruise prior to Pennsic.

I wouldn't take that bet. I *always* seem to goof when I have unstructured time.

Camping, yay!

I vote for goofing off. :-)

Have her use Mozilla Suite Composer.

Actually, I'd recommend checking out Nvu. Far as I can tell, Composer is a dead project -- it works for very simple purposes, but it's not being actively maintained any more. Last I checked, Nvu was trying to take that codebase and bring it more up-to-date. And it's standalone. It may still be too buggy for her, but it's worth examining...

It is a dead project, but for someone who has issues with complex web formatting, it's an excellent tool anyway. Use the older version of the Suite or the Netscape composer; they don't insist on playing stupid CSS games. (CSS was supposed to make our code shorter and easier to use; most of the software that uses it produces brain-wracking code.)

Basically, Composer is too dumb a program to be able to screw much up, which is why I like it for my users. Contribute is better, because it costs money.

I just installed NVU for windows, which looks like someone took Mozilla composer and did things to it to make it reassuring for Linux users. For the average non-geek... *sigh*
