Banking Weirdness
I do almost all of my banking electronically and I never visit a bank teller. So when I want to get cash I hit an ATM, usual one which does not charge a fee (most do but a few don't). When I need to deposit a check, I go wherever is convenient and deposit through the ATM.
The other day I was had a check to deposit so I visited one of the banks I use, but their ATM was being serviced. So I drove to the next bank I could think of, which turned out to be a Commerce Bank not too far away. I was very surprised to discover that they charged the same fee for deposits that they do for withdraws ($1.50). Since I was in a hurry I said ok to the fee and went on my way. Much to my surprise, when I checked my account Commerce Bank had not taken a $1.50 out of my deposit, and had in fact added an extra $1.50 to my total. So instead of getting $119.24 (my actual deposit) or $117.74 (deposit minus $1.50) I got $120.74.
I'm thinking of trying an experiment and depositing $5 cash to see if I get the extra $1.50 or not. If I do, then I've got this big stack of $2 bills which I could deposit one at a time - hell of a return at that rate :)

I asked why, and they pointed to the penny stretching machine next to it, which costs 50c + 1c.
Gee, I could get rich from that change machine.

Mind you it would be pretty slow (and you'd have to deal with pennies, which just annoy me). (Not that filling out all those deposit envelopes would any less annoying)
