Hail Eris!

So, I'm driving through a tiny village in upstate New York, late on Friday night.  We're running about two hours behind schedule and have been driving for most of the evening.  Suddenly there is a cop behind me with his lights on - damn.  I pull over, turn off the engine and roll down the window.  The cop comes over and briefly explains that he was going to give me a ticket, but after getting a closer look at my license plate, realized that he couldn't, and that we were free to go.

In many states, not being able to see the state name is not legal. You might want to check.

So are you going to tell us exactly why the cop wouldn't ticket you, if it's not anything we've guessed so far?
