Book Log

Well, another year is coming to an end. This year was better then last as far as book reading went, but still not as good as it should be (30+ titles read would be ideal). Since I'm not going to finish my current book for a few more days (reading Delany's Dhalgren)

One thing I found was that the CPAP keeps me from staying up reading (or falling asleep while reading), since reading is nearly impossible while wearing it.

Here are the results:

January
1. Bad Monkeys - Matt Ruff
2. MirrorMask - Neil Gaiman
3. Balance of Trade - Sharon Lee & Steve Miller
March
4. Red Lightning - John Varley
5. Skinny Dip - Carl Hiaasen
6. L'Amber - Tanith Lee
April
7. The Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess
May
8. The Toyminator - Robert Rankin
June
9. Sharing Knife: Passage - Lois McMaster Bujold
10. The Dangerous Alphabet - Neil Gaiman
July
11. Low Port - Sharon Lee & Steve Miller eds.
August
12. Superheroes - John Varley ed.
September
13. Accelerando - Charles Stross
14. Jhegaala - Steven Brust
October
15. Rolling Thunder - John Varley
November
16. Nation - Terry Pratchett

16. Nation - Terry Pratchett [753/1652]
Here is a rare beast - a new non-Discworld book from Terry Pratchett. Very enjoyable.

15. Rolling Thunder - John Varley [745/1643]
John Varley's take on the Heinlein Juvenile SF book. It avoids answering most of the questions it raises and leaves plenty of room for another book in the series (this is book 3 after Red Thunder and Red Lightning. Each book follows a different generation of the same family)

14. Jhegaala - Steven Brust [746/1643]
Fun and quick read. Not the greatest Vlad book, but not bad either.

[[ Still trying to gather enough information to write intelligently about this book. Need to read more of his stuff. ]]

12. Superheroes - John Varley ed. [748/1643]
Finished this short story collection a while ago, but kept forgetting to post it. It was an interesting idea - stories about superheroes from people who haven't written superhero stories (comic or otherwise), and there are a few good ones in the bunch, but also a lot that are pretty predictable.

11. Low Port - Sharon Lee & Steve Miller eds. [746/1640]
A collection of short stories set on the edges of society. Not bad, but nothing that really stands out either. I'm going to stick with short story collections for a little while - I can usually finish a story a two a night, rather then falling asleep in the middle of a chapter.

10. The Dangerous Alphabet - Neil Gaiman [747/1640]
I probably shouldn't count this as a book read, but it's in the database and it's Neil Gaiman, so it goes on the list. A very short illustrated children's story with a pair of lines for each letter in the alphabet.

9. Sharing Knife: Passage - Lois McMaster Bujold [747/1639]
Book three of the series (originally planned as a two book series, but today I just read that book 4 will be out in Feb 2009). Very enjoyable (as evidenced by how quickly I finished it). Very character driven.

8. The Toyminator - Robert Rankin [747/1638]
Rankin's second book set in Toy City (the first being The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse), continues the adventures for private eye Eddie Bear and his partner Jack. It was silly and weird, but still fun.
