11. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom - Cory Doctorow *

Cory Doctorow's first novel creates a future world where social standing (via esteem and respect) has replaced money as the means of exchange. The action all takes place in Walt Disney World which is now under the control of various adhocracies. Neat stuff :)

i have heard good things about cory doctorow. Maybe i will use your review as an excuse to check him out.

Cory has some interesting ideas. His worlds aren't as fleshed out as some, but he keeps the stories focused and enjoyable.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Mirage. I'd be done by now if my life stopped getting in the way of my consumption of fiction.

I buy way too many books (which is why I have 800+ that I need to read still, and why I'm trying to really limit my buying this year).

My regular reading is going at a snails pace. Most of what I'm getting done are audio books that I listen too during my commute (easily an hour to an hour and a half each day).

I've liked most of Doctorow's stuff, but I couldn't take Down and Out. The economics make no sense; who makes the food? And the pervasive musolatry got tiresome, of course.
