What comes after cyberpunk? Is this a genre thing I'm just unaware of or is that the point of the book?

Mostly just a sub-genre. Sort of cyberpunk minus the dystopia.

It's partly the tech--Diamond Age nanotech means that meatspace becomes almost as malleable as cyberspace.
