Probably more about LJ then modern culture. Near as I can tell the catagories are divided solely on the number of people with the same interest.

My best guess is:
Rare < 10
Unusual 10 - 1,000
Specialist 1,000 - 10,000
Common 10,000 - 50,000
Popular 50,000 - 100,000
Universal > 100,000

I don't think I know Dagonell - have to look him up :)
